The residents of Crow Wing County, Minnesota, have had enough of their floating island.

“Floating islands are common in Minnesota; it’s the size of this one that’s causing all the fuss. Sue Galatowitsch, a wetland ecologist at the University of Minnesota, says the island likely weighs at least 1,000 tons and could extend 30 feet below the water. Technically, it’s a floating bog. A natural assemblage of peat moss festooned with cattails and tamarack trees, the bog is more than four acres across—that’s about 64 tennis courts. ‘A bog that size,’ Galatowitsch says, “can kind of do whatever it wants.“

Profs are literally the exact opposite of how hs teachers tell you like over spring break some of my friends are touring the west and one of our profs has a house in Minnesota and he was like “yo come crash at my place save some money” and they’re literally just chillin out at his house watching cops reruns how surreal

Actual Things My Profs Have Done

- English prof brought her kid to class, class consisted of playing with legos on the floor

- Physics prof brought himself to class, class consisted of playing with legos on the floor

- Astro prof helped me smuggle my hamster out of my apartment during inspections, he bought her a hamster ball

- Crashed at a physics profs house in Minnesota on spring break to save money on hotels

- Played frozen ice hockey with former lego physics prof in the basement labs

- Sometimes I take smoke breaks with this hilarious and extremely Bulgarian physics prof, he grumbles about the younger profs

- We chucked a broken telescope off the roof once with my astro prof to see what would happen (he did not have keys to the roof I do not ask questions about how he got up there)

- Almost every geology prof here licks rocks to identify them

- Meteorology prof had a competition of how many people you can fit inside a deflated weather balloon (4)

- Stuck dry ice in front of a high powered class 4 laser to “see what would happen” with my boss/physics prof (lots of steam)

- Chem prof has accidentally lit his podium on fire. Twice.

- Physics prof, aptly named “physics dad”, brings in homemade cookies for the undergrad office every Friday. Bought us all Valentine’s on Valentine’s Day as well.

- Got offered milk duds at the park by a (possibly drunk) physics prof on welcome weekend

yall r discussing midwest things n its wild bec i grew up in the south but me n my family r originally from northern minnesota/wisconsin right? and seriously, for some reason midwest habits n dialect stuff sticks like glue,, i have a surprising amount of midwestern dialect markers despite my main contact just being thru my parents who have mostly smoothed out they accents by now,, its interesting!! the midwest is linguistic tree sap,, some ex: i say -ag as -eg (bag? beg) n i do the ope :>

Oh and Michigan is p close to Canada and so some of their linguistics have seeped into me, like I add “eh?” At the end of some sentences and I use the long “O” sound for some words (like “road” I say as “rooad”)
