During a promotional event in Australia, actor John Cho confirmed that beloved Star Trek character Hikaru Sulu is gay. According to Cho, writer Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin decided to make Sulu canonically gay in the upcoming movie, Star Trek Beyond. The reason why will warm your emotionless, Vulcan heart.
I’m watching this old interview from when Star Trek 2009 came out and it’s Zach and Chris talking about how Karl somehow got ahold of a tiny Enterprise ship toy and he would play with it and like make videos of it and it’s just fuckin g:
Z: He brought it with us for the rest of the trip and you’d be on the plane sleeping-
C: -and you’d just hear:
Z&C: [woooooshhhh!]
Z: And Karl would be taking a video of the Starship Enterprise like flying across your face-
C: But dead serious! The man is dead- the man is 36 years old!
Z: And he was just really - he was just really into it.
Z: And then he broke it - it broke in Dubai, as we were on our way to Kuwait… and then it was all… downhill from there.
C: I think someone prevented him from shooting it in some part of the airport. He… he was asked to put it away which had to be humiliating,
C: “Sir please, could you please-”
Z: “Could you please put away your toy spaceship?”
Karl Urban and John Cho interview

Interviewer: Do you get to skip the queue(at Starbucks) because you’re like, stars..
Karl: We don’t.
John: We don’t. Chris Pine does.
Can I just say I really love how colorful the Star Trek Beyond posters are? And I love that they pay homage to the original movie posters? I feel like it was a visual cue that they were trying to return to the movies’ original campy feel and I think this movie was a lot closer to it’s roots than the other two by far, and this movie just completely felt different than the first two. It triggered a much larger nostalgia reaction this time around and while it was still action packed, it just felt like one of the original movies and aaah I just loved this one so much. It’s easily my favorite of the reboots.
Its really surreal to hear about Anton Yelchin dying because he was like, one of my first celebrity crushes? Like he was a big part of me getting into fandoms in the first place? My love of him, especially as Chekov, got me into Star Trek back in 2008 and that was my first fandom, ever. And its so surreal and sad because he was, albeit a bit indirectly, a huge part of who I am today
-large aliens actually being smol
-Kirk ripped his shirt
-So many Anton Yelchin scenes
-Seriously thank all 3 of the writers for the more equal screen time for the crew members this time around
-Bones actually gets to do more than speak witty one-liners
-Jaylah
-Everything about Jaylah was great. She’s not sexualized, she’s not there to be a romantic subplot, she’s smart and actually has a key roll in the film. Without her and her technology skills Yorktown would have been destroyed
-Jaylah’s traps
-Montgomery Scotty
-James T
-When Jaylah and Scotty go to investigate the set off trap and Scotty just had a rock to defend himself.
-Kirk asked for his crewmember’s help by name. She got no screentime and we as an audience don’t know her, but that crew is FAMILY and Kirk knows, trusts, and cares about everyone
-Uhura separating the ship
-The crew knowing beyond the shadow of a doubt that Kirk was coming to rescue them
-Sulu’s family
-Chekov saying “inwented in Russia”
-Jaylah sitting in the captain’s chair
-Spock being delirious
-Spock volunteering Bones for a mission he knows Bones won’t like
-Kirk’s reaction to Spock volunteering Bones
-BONES’ reaction to Spock volunteering Bones
-All of the crew genuinely cares for each other and it shows
-No unnecessary Uhura/Spock drama
-Simon Pegg basically confirming that none of the crew is straight
-The USS Enterprise in warp
-beautiful cinematography all around
-NO LENSE FLARES
-Awesome new uniforms
-CLASSICAL MUSIC
-For once we actually get to explore strange new worlds instead of protecting earth- again
so going to star trek beyond last night literally exhausted me like I came back at like 10 and was out like a light at 11:30 it was AMAZING let me explain:
it blows the other two movies out of the water, I’m saying this as a huge fan of the original series who thought the first movie was meh and the second was goddawful, GO SEE STAR TREK: BEYOND!
