Honestly, sounds sketch but seriously craigslist can be tight as hell. I've used it for a variety of things (rideshare, volunteering, free furniture) and I've met nothing but cool people. Also, there's a lot of facebook groups for people looking to get rid of their furniture; if you live in a college town the transient nature of a lot of the people there means a lot of people might be moving with no idea how to get rid of their stuff. Ask around, it works.
