Huh. Solarpunk Notre Dame. I know people feel that this one building in Europe is getting Way Too Much Attention, but I have to say this is a cool redesign.

All green — not solarpunk vs solarpunk
I just wanted to address some aesthetics which I guess separate solarpunk from generic green concepts. 

Something that always bothers be about ‘futuristic’ designs, whether green or not, is that the designs always seems to look sterile, smooth, textureless, cold, unwelcoming, and very very white. 

And the common concept cities! They are always so open and spread apart! And you know what that means? It is a city specifically designed with cars in mind. I think that doesn’t always register for a lot of people. Spread out cities = made for car culture, condensed cities = made for public transit, biking, walking, etc.

What I want for solarpunk — and for the future — is warmth! color! texture! craftsmanship!  And a very important feature is that I want it to be built first and foremost for streetcars and the like. Cars are useful and they can stick around, but in a condensed city people won’t need to rely on them as much. In modern American cities, many people need cars because of how cities are designed. 

I hope I am being clear on how solarpunk aesthetics differs from common concepts of a green future!

I really wish I could draw my own cityscapes, but alas, I am no artist. Instead I have to comb the internet, searching for “close enough.”

Maybe someday I’ll have the disposable income to commission artists to draw pieces that are intentionally solarpunk….. Someday….

The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken (Dutch: Koninklijke Serres van Laken, French: Serres Royales de Laeken), are a vast complex of monumental heated greenhouses in the park of the Royal Palace of Laeken in the north of Brussels. It is one of the major tourist attractions of the city.

The complex was commissioned by King Leopold II and designed by Alphonse Balat. Built between 1874 and 1895, the complex was finished with the completion of the so-called “Iron Church”, a domed greenhouse that would originally serve as the royal chapel. The total floor surface of this immense complex is 2.5 hectares (270,000 square feet). 800,000 liters (over 200,000 US gallons) of fuel oil are needed each year to heat the buildings.

The complex can only be visited during a two-week period in April–May each year, when most flowers are in full bloom.

Here’s a thing I’ve had around in my head for a while!

Okay, so I’m pretty sure that by now everyone at least is aware of Steampunk, with it’s completely awesome Victorian sci-fi aesthetic. But what I want to see is Solarpunk – a plausible near-future sci-fi genre, which I like to imagine as based on updated Art Nouveau, Victorian, and Edwardian aesthetics, combined with a green and renewable energy movement to create a world in which children grow up being taught about building electronic tech as well as food gardening and other skills, and people have come back around to appreciating artisans and craftspeople, from stonemasons and smithies, to dress makers and jewelers, and everyone in between. A balance of sustainable energy-powered tech, environmental cities, and wicked cool aesthetics. 

A lot of people seem to share a vision of futuristic tech and architecture that looks a lot like an ipod – smooth and geometrical and white. Which imo is a little boring and sterile, which is why I picked out an Art Nouveau aesthetic for this.

With energy costs at a low, I like to imagine people being more inclined to focus their expendable income on the arts!

Aesthetically my vision of solarpunk is very similar to steampunk, but with electronic technology, and an Art Nouveau veneer.

So here are some buzz words~

Handcrafted wares!
Tailors and dressmakers!
Streetcars!
Airships!
Stained glass window solar panels!!!
Education in tech and food growing!
Less corporate capitalism, and more small businesses!

Can you imagine how pretty it would be to have stained glass windows everywhere that are actually solar panels? The tech is already headed in that direction!  Or how about wide-brim hats, or parasols that are topped with discreet solar panel tech incorporated into the design, with ports you can stick your phone charger in to?

my favorite thing about large university campuses is that there’s all these little hidey holes to be found like the top floor of the bio building with ivy growing up the walls and the best view of the sunset over the campus or the secret trail through the greenhouses under the willow trees that’s lined with ivys and vegetables or the path to the pavilion by the pond that has lights that make the trees glow orange like fall no matter what time of year or the observatory with the perfect view of the night sky aah i love those kind of places that make you feel like you have the world to yourself even in the middle of thousands of people

Farmer family friend has an out of control mint problem around one of his greenhouses because he had a potted mint plant that he set on the ground and it grew a tendril out of the pot which touched the soil and grew roots.

It had never occurred to me before that a potted plant could escape.

Friendly reminder that mint is incredibly invasive when planted in the ground and it will crawl out from potted hell when it's just 1 cm near soil like the gremlin it is.

It's roots are fast growing and aggressive, leaving no space for other plants and basically taking over your entire garden. It's both fascinating and terrifying.
