Hey I'm just starting to get into astronomy and astrophysics and am looking for a good first telescope but have no idea what to look for. I think I was a refractor but I'm open to other kinds and want one that's about $200-$300. I don't care about seeing super deep into space but would like to still be able see some of the closer deep space objects. Thank you so much

You really cant find good cheap telescopes. Maybe at Walmart or something you can get one for under $100. Binoculars work too.

I’ve been asked in the past to teach people about astronomy over the internet, and I do not have the time to do that. I do, however, have the time to upload all of my astronomy notes, various charts and graphs, and one particularly heart wrenching lecture about global warming via my very passionate astrophysics professor, and possibly in the future even lecture slides. You calling yourself an astrophysicist already when you're still a student?

I have an associates in astronomy and will be getting my bachelors in astrophysics in December because the uni wouldn’t take some of my gen ed classes so I have to take them again.

I am published, I am in SPS, I have worked in both lab and observatory settings. I have already started my masters classes in physics because I have already completed the undergraduate classes I need to take before them. I used to grade half of the departments astronomy classes, I have presented research at multiple conferences.

A lack of a piece of paper does not strip me of all of my accomplishments and hard work.

I wanted to go to college for astronomy. No colleges in my area did astro majors so I found myself in an astrophysics program, despite not being so great at the physics part. Fast forward a year. A friend told me one of the profs in the department was looking for researchers, I’m poor and want a pretty resume. Within 45 minutes of hearing about this job, I had been interviewed (while having green hair and sweatpants and no less than 5 piercings on me), I had gotten the job, and the keys to the basement labs. I get invited now to all the fancy seminars. I meet people from around the world and make connections (and may have accidentally mouthed off to one of the fancy boys from JINA-CEE but I didn’t know it was him at the time I swear he was just an awkward bump on a log how was I supposed to know ((he was impressed at my ballsy-ness so it all worked out))). My research job is the hot-topic cutting-edge Thing of The Month and so I get to meet fancy boys from science clubs a lot which helps my recognition. One of the profs is a fan of the research I’m doing and offers to put me under the wing of his former advisor, Mr. Bump On A Log from JINA. I have been sucked into the rabbit hole of nuclear astrophysics despite most of what I’ve been doing is Networking and not hardcore research because fucking hell I’ve got classes too you know this was supposed to be a summer job I just started early because I needed gas money.

I have managed to get myself a Respectable For My Age reputation.

All either on accident or by sheer bullshit luck.

I just wanted to look at the stars.

do you think it would be worth it for me to try to become an astrophysicist even though im not above average in math? ive always had decent grades in my math classes but my parents repeatedly suggest that I should major law instead and im starting to feel kinda shaky about my decision to study astrophysics :/

astrophysics is 99% math and 1% looking at cool stuff through telescopes. Most of the math isn’t crazily hard, but there’s just so god damn much of it so it’s more of an endurance thing.

So I mean it’s very crucial to develop your math skills as early as possible, because math is a subject that just builds onto itself. If you don’t start off with a strong base then it’s going to be almost impossible for you to catch up to your classmates. Not only that but physics is the same way.

Basically you have to be extremely dedicated to your education. If that’s something you’re going to have trouble with, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Most universities have astrophysics programs or something similar. If not, either astronomy or physics, and then you’d be qualified for astrophysics in grad school.

A decent beginner telescope is about $150 in my experience. The beginner scope I had was a 4” Galileo reflector. Try going through the Orion telescope company website, they have sections for beginner telescopes and Orion is a very good telescope company! So is Celestron! It also depends on what you want out of the telescope. If you want portability maybe get a refractor, they’re a bit more expensive but much more compact. Dobsonian type telescopes are also good for beginners and also pretty cheap for their size, I recently purchased a 10 inch Dob for $600!

I'm interested in it but I've never studied physics and I wasn't amazing at maths in school. Algebra was probably my strongest point haha. I hope this doesn't seem like a silly ask!

Hey! Astrophysics is actually 100% math. Physics is essentially applied math. Astronomy has a little less math with it but you’d have to know programming tho

Astrophysics is about 90% math. In some places a physics degree pretty much comes with a math degree, I know in my specific program there’s only a one class difference between the math classes you need for a math degree and for a physics degree, and the class was programming anyway

Some unis offer Bachelors of Arts in astronomy as well as the bachelors of science. I’m assuming the BoA is less math intensive and more qualitative?
