#ukraine bitch!!I think a lot of people assume in their heads that Europe is further south than it is because it’s so warm there in comparison to say, Siberia or northern Canada.
Well why is Europe so warm then? I’m glad you asked. They get all the hot wind.
And you may reasonably ask, is this hot air coming from the central Atlantic or from the mouths of European politicians? Like most things it’s a combination of different… but no yeah it’s just warm air currents from down south in the tropics
This also shows why a relatively mild heat in California or Texas might cause drought and heat-stroke in places like England or Denmark, because those areas are used to Northern-Canada levels of heat
I think the thing that affected me most when moving across the ocean is the strange high light in Northern Europe. The sky is a different color, and the winters are just slightly darker and drawn-in.

Random story of the day:
Mapmakers often put secrets in their maps as copyright traps, to make sure no one copies their maps. For example, some map makers put fake streets in maps, sometimes fake features. If they see a map that has that street, they know it was copied from them.
Similarly, in 2005, the New Oxford American Dictionary published a new word: Esquivalience, meaning “Willful avoidance of one’s official responsibilities”. It was a made up word, a copyright trap to make sure no other dictionaries copied them. If anyone copied their dictionary, the stealer wouldn’t be able to come up with a source except for the New Oxford. (Dictionary.com fell for this trap)
Another example of a copyright trap was when the author of The Trivia Encyclopedia put a false fact in his book, because he was certain that the makers of the game Trivial Pursuit were taking his facts for the game. (The false fact was that “TV detective Columbo’s first name was Phillip” when the show never specified his name. Sure enough, the ‘fact’ showed up in Trivial Pursuit.
@aroacedavestrider my dude i cannot in good faith accept these useless geography facts on account of them being iconic, actually
im glad to know my horrible facts are making their rounds and im here with more horrible facts
- the most secluded inhabited island in the world is a place called tristan da cunha. its in the middle of the atlantic ocean at a whopping fucking 1500 miles away from the closest inhabited location (south africa). people just fucking live out there??
- the oldest lake in the world is (probably) lake zaysan in kazahstan. nobodys entirely certain yet but theres evidence that suggests that this is a 65 million year old body of water, meaning theres a lake that exists and can be looked at today that could have had dinosaurs drinking out of it at one point
-the lake immediately following that is confirmed to be at least 25 million years old and thats lake baikal in siberia russia. the bitch is on a continental fault that expands about 2cm per year and as of right now this lake is over a mile deep. the bottom however is FULL of sediment and the actual rift floor is NINE MILES DOWN. this monstrosity of a lake contains literally 20% of the earths nonfrozen fresh water, it has its own unique species of seal, and eventually in millions of years this thing is gonna be an ocean. lake baikal is a baby fucking ocean. its gonna split russias ass in two. i am 100% certain it is sentient
- there is not a single river in saudi arabia and that blows my mind for some reason
- theres whats now considered a lost “eighth continent” thats submerged in the south pacific ocean. the islands of new zealand are the highest peaks of the chunk of continental crust that we now call zealandia. its about half the size of australia and its also connected to other little archipelagos like new caledonia. we found it. old zealand
- the entrance to this fucking ancient bay lake in venezuela (lake maracaibo, over 20 million years old) is the most likely place to get struck by lightning in the world. it gets around 1.2 million lightning strikes per year
- LAKE HILLIER AUSTRALIA FUCKIGN PINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- and finally. more enclave border bullshit. i told yall about baarle hertog. now look at india and pakistan. i present to you the one and only third order enclave
this . this was a piece of india, surrounded by a piece of bangladesh, surrounded.. by a piece of india..... surrounded by bangladesh . it has since been ceded over to bangladesh but the fact that we allowed this to exist is incredible
anyway do with all that what you will. raise your hand if you can tell this is a fixation of mine

Maps matter. Map 1 over-represents territory. Map 2 is weighted by where people live …
Right. Plus, a lot of blue people live in those red areas. Rural districts tend to be dominated politically by those who control the land and resources. The owners are overwhelmingly conservative, and they are able to control the politics of the lands and people they own, but a lot of people suffer for it.
boy, he’s super close to admitting that a straight-up vote can’t win the republicans anything so they feel entitled to cheat.
people who all cram into apartments in los angelos and new york, alot of which are fucking illegal immigrants, shouldn’t decide the fate of a whole nation when they have no idea the needs of rural america.
So, first of all, this is a GREAT example of how racism feeds into the Electoral College. Undocumented immigrants don’t vote, and the idea that cities somehow breed more voter fraud BECAUSE they are more diverse, or that POOR people, people who, say, live in APARTMENTS instead of being LAND OWNERS is such old-timey classism to be laughable.
And that’s SO MUCH of the rhetoric around the EC. People talk about how they don’t want “Urban” or “City” people making choices, and 99% of the time, that’s just code for “black” and “brown” and “Jewish” and “Gay” because you bigots think that 1. Only minorities live in cities and minorities ONLY live in cities and 2. You don’t want anyone who isn’t a WASP-y Farmer voting apparently.
Like, you’re argument is literally “cities have more poor brown people, and I don’t think their votes should count.” So FUCK YOU.
Also, cities WOULDN’T dominate in the popular vote.
Those 6 cities, combined, have less than 22 million people. The US has 327 million.
And this is my point- the US is not made of a small handful of huge cities. The vast majority of the country lives in SMALL cities and towns, under a million people each, and their suburbs.
So, no, with the Popular Vote, you could not pander just to the biggest cities and be done with it. If you add up EVERY SINGLE CITY with more than 100,000 people in it (Which is 311 cities), that’s still only 94 million. 28% of the US population.
Even if ALL the ~poor brown people~ that you want to stop from voting lived EXCLUSIVELY in cities (which they don’t, you fucking racist), the popular vote DOESN’T actually empower cities.
The EC ALSO doesn’t actually help rural (”white land owning”) populations (you fucking racist, you don’t even know the racial or economic breakdown of the rural areas you claim to care about). In fact, the EC makes things worse for rural areas. 46 states have an urban majority, and “winner-take-all” laws that have been enacted by state legislatures in 48 states. So if there is a stark divide between rural and urban populations, in 46 states, the urban votes will win and 100% of the electoral points will go to the urban side (Where YOU think all the poor brown people live, again, you fucking racist).
However, in a popular vote system, no one’s vote would get thrown away like that, and everyone’s vote would be counted equally in the final tally. The popular vote would actually give MORE voice to rural populations that are all but completely erased in our current system.
And it is important to remember that in reality cities do not vote in perfect blocks. Neither do states. Even the most liberal city has conservative voters and even the deepest rural hellholes in Texas has progressives (I was one of them until I moved for college!) Those people matter. Those people should count.
Why not have a system where CITIZENS elect the president? Why does it matter which state someone lives in, if all votes should count equally? (I mean, I know YOU think that POOR BROWN PEOPLE shouldn’t be voting, you fucking racist, but ya know, for the rest of us who actually value the idea of a democracy)
US climate with equivalent cities from around the world.
This is the greatest map I have ever seen. I want an interactive version where you can click on any city in the world and get a pop-up list of all the climate-equivalent cities.
so it turns out this exists and it makes a fine rabbit hole for passing the time during a conference call
When I see actual, real Native Americans complain about Magic in North America and say it’s racism from their mouths then I will believe it.
Hearing it from a non-Native American, I’m not going to believe it.
I am a Native American, and Magic In North America is extremely disrespectful.
This is what a few other Natives have said about it:

(this is the Native Appropriations post)
But yeah, no natives are upset about this… none at all…
here’s the Native Appropriations post on the first release, as well, also worth reading
hooooo boy.
