Ohio wanted Toledo because it had access through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic which would give Ohio one of the westernmost seaports to the Atlantic which at the time would make Ohio an economic powerhouse
Then Michigan was like “we’re gonna be a state now” and wrote up the border to include the Toledo strip. “nuh uh that’s ours” said Ohio, which started the Toledo war, an unofficial war and official pissing match in which the only injury was a Michigan officer in a brawl with an Ohio officer who stabbed him with a pen knife.
Michigan’s Baby Boy govorner (seriously that was one of his titles, Stevens T. Mason was only 24) was a hot headed 24 year old and wouldn’t budge on the border. Finally, Andrew Jackson was like “children PLEASE”, and basically told Michigan that they had to give up the strip if they wanted to become a state. As compensation Michigan gained the Entire Upper Peninsula, because at the time the white man didn’t know that in that Horrible Cold Northland hid mountains full of iron and copper and turned out to be not so useless after all.

My grandmother, who grew up in Puerto Rico, when seeing Lake Michigan for the first time with my grandfather exclaimed, “This is not a lake, it is a sea!”
Lake Superior has tides. They’re not as dramatic as the actual ocean’s of course. But still. For every storm that kicks up 200ft spray and waves that crash over the tops of the lighthouses on the piers, there’s days when you can’t tell where the water meets the sky.
Lake Superior doesn’t have a monster, Lake Superior IS the monster.
