i wish media would stop perpetuating the name “trekker”. never in my career have i met anyone who prefers that title over “trekkie”
Organized Trek fandom was started by women, especially the letter writing campaign that convinced NBC to give the show its third season.
In the 1970s many male fans felt “Trekkies” was too feminine (also disturbingly close to “Spockies” which I kid you not was a real thing) so the backlash was to try forcing Trekker into the vernacular. Which was more “masculine” sounding and also similar to the male centric Trucker fandom which also was a thing that existed in the 1970s. Nothing more testosteroney than big rigs and CB radios, amirite fellas?!
Anyway, it never caught on. Thank god.
Oh my God, we’ll that explains the story I just added to this exact post, THANK YOU.
Last year, I went to RICC dressed as Ro Laren. This was literally the first thing that happened when I finally got past the line:
two guys come up from out of nowhere and hug me. “Aww! Star Trek! Awesome!” they said.
Me: Yeah…I’m a huge trekkie.
Guys: Oh. You must mean “trekker.” that’s the correct term that fans preferblahblahblah
Me: No. I meant trekkie.
I can’t believe that they tried to mansplain the word trekkie to me. like, HONESTLY. I know what I’m about.
I LOVE Stardust, beyond all reason. And this was an example of what made me love it. The fact that his men knew and DID NOT CARE, and showed genuine concern and affection for him just made the pirates better characters to me. And DENIRO…. The GUSTO… This is so overlooked, I swear. It’s the mid-2000’s equivalent to The Princess Bride, with the wit, great acting/writing, swashbuckling, romance, comedy, and turning fantasy tropes on their head while honouring them at the same time. Yes, I was there opening weekend, and this was/is on my list of favourite fantasy films of all time.
True facts.
the whole movie is a delight, but MAN did i love Captain Shakespeare and his crew

⛩️Welcome to the Doodle Champion Island Games! ⛩️
I’ve put in literally every ounce of my heart and soul over the past two years as Creative Lead for today’s Google Doodle. Partnering with Japanese animation studio Studio4°C (!!!) and working with an *incredibly* dedicated, creative, open, inspiring team at Google to make a love letter to Japanese 16-bit video games that inspired me and so many.
The list is too long but thank you to all the folks who helped to make this INSANE doodle a reality.
Calling this a dream project is an understatement, I felt like I trained my whole life for this.
7 sport mini-games, 22 side quests, an entire world to explore. Please enjoy :)
At last…LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Hello! I'm a nerd writing a story about a guy who gets to go and work on the SPT (it's romance and fiction but that's the setting). Anything fun or crazy about astrophysicists I should know or include?

It has been 53 years since humans abandoned their home. They’re now almost 14 trillion miles from Earth. Out here, the stars are distant and faint, leaving the Atlas to be illuminated only by the florescent lights lining its halls. This is the farthest anyone has ever strayed from home.
The Alpha Centauri system is 4.37 light years from Earth, and is the Atlas’ destination. Seven planets, three of which are habitable. It was the only logical option.
Over half a century ago they left in search of another home. They had left their home planet it waste and ruin, an unsalvageable husk of what was once their own Eden of which they were cast out. They drove themselves to the brink of extinction with wars waged by the rich where it was the poor that died.
Some had accepted the fate of the human race. Many were in denial.
But there were a few hopeful young scientists with a plan that would require all hands on deck. An engineering feat never before seen by humanity, and they put everything they had left into it.
The Atlas. Carrier of the World upon his shoulders. The last stand against total annihilation.
Extinction is the Rule. Survival is the Exception.
This is such a big thing for people in the fanfiction community. Years and years of being told that fanfiction isn’t real writing and that it’s wrong or disgusting. The message that Neil, Michael, and David send is so important for the kids in fanfic that feel ashamed or guilty about writing or reading fanfiction.
While cleaning your attic, you find a box of glass balls with names on them. You accidentally drop one, and as soon as it shatters, a person appears.
“Dude,” your brother said as he opened the door to the attic. “Stop breaking stuff.”
I love these clever subversions of fantasy writing prompts to give them an mundane punchline.
They give me life.
So we all know that (unfortunately) Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are not writing Star Trek 4 and Justin Lin isn’t directing it. It is back to JJ and his crew.
But is it just me that is terrified of what JJ is going to do to Jaylah? We all know about his love for love interest plots and unnecessary nude scenes. I swear to god if he shows Jaylah in her underwear once or reduces her to someone’s girlfriend (Kirks or Scotty’s idc who) I promise you i w i l l r i o t
He might not do this and and he might stick with the beyond theme of hopefulness and keep everything that Pegg and Jung brought to the rebooted trek and make it a great Star Trek movie and make it similar to beyond.
But if he does take the into darkness route (and we all know the rule about the trek films) and does something problematic eg kill of Ben Sulu and/or Demora Sulu for ‘shock factor’ or any of the above I will not rest until I have met him and given him a stern lecture about the morals of trek
