Get a rabbit cage or something built for ferrets. “Rat” cages are way too small for rats. They need buddies, imo I liked raising boys better. They love hammocks. Bird toys are just as good as rat toys (ladders, ropes, cozies). They love attention and giving kisses!! And don’t burn candles/incense/smoke around your ratties, they have incredibly sensitive lungs. Get them low dust bedding or even better, cloth bedding, for this same reason. They’re so very smart too, so get them plenty of toys and re-arrange their cage every time you clean it to keep them stimulated. Look up the subreddit for rats, you could find lots of info there!

I read an article today suggesting that rats are so empathetic that they often mimic their owners emotions and so if their owner is depressed the rats can become depressed NO NO MY BABIES MY POOR LITTLE RAT BABIES I LOVE YOU EVERYTHING IS GONNA BE OKAY I don’t care about me it’s too late for me bUT NOT THEM. THEY ARE TOO GOOD FOR SADS
Honestly of all the rodents I’ve owned over the years (mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, miniature hamsters), peoples perceptions of how “dirty” and “scary” each of them are are literally the exact opposite of how it actually is.
Rats are by far the cleanest, smartest, and most gentle, followed by mice. Gerbils are kinda freaky and not quite as clean as mice but are incredibly smart. Miniature hamsters are cleaner than gerbils but not quite as intelligent.
But hamsters.
Hamsters are BY FAR are the most disturbing. They will eat their own body parts, eat their cagemates, they eat their children. Sometimes for no discernible reason. Hamsters are fucking terrifying. They literally eat their problems.
Those beady little eyes. So much sin lies behind them.
so we got a corndog box for the rats and my brilliant roommate cut a hole so all of our rats will become corndogs

I only have 3. One is a girl (Planck) and quite possibly pregnant so she has to be separated on her own for at least her gestation period and then I have a boy (Niels) that was on his own and rats need companions so I got him a cagemate (Albert)
