When I was little, there were two people I looked up to and aspired to be. Carl Sagan and Princess Leia. Sagan because he was a scientist, and he made science fun! I wanted to do that! I wanted to make learning about space fun like he did! And then Princess Leia. I wanted to be her because she was beautiful, smart, a princess, and a professional ass kicker. She was a rebel. Standing up for what was right knowing it could get her killed. I wanted to be like that. I wanted to be that brave.
Never in a million years would I have thought that I would have to be both. To be a scientist and have to defend the truth. To have to stand up for facts. No, my life isn’t so much in danger. It’s worse. Our entire planet is in danger and to be a scientist, to educate on global warming, is to be a rebel. A cry in the night to not let our only home slip through our fingers. To fight for those who have no voice with which to speak. To fight for a future.
To be a scientist is to rebel.
And rebelling is exactly what it felt like I was doing. Standing in the freezing rain on a dreary Saturday afternoon, the Washington Monument looming over us. Music and calls to action from the stage flowed through the crowd. And when the march started, the foggy outline of the Capitol Building barely visible in the distance as we marched towards it. 60,000 people flooded onto Constitution Avenue. It was beautiful.
