Well, once again referring to this post, I notice Newt’s birthday is in January. Most events of the film take place in January. So, uh… I borrowed some dialogue from Bob’s Burgers (possibly the only thing I like as much as Pacific Rim right now). Now here’s what could’ve happened in between the scenes we actually saw. 

(Also, I noticed that Pentecost addresses the scientists as “Newt” and “Gottlieb” - adhering to each one’s personal preferences. He’s just the coolest.)

Only liked by the public.

I’ve met him and he’s as pretentious in real life as his is on twitter. Actually, no one in my department here likes him. 

He hasn’t published anything this century. His last publication was in January of 1998. He worked with the COSMOS project that put out 3 papers in 2007-8, but it was a collab and he didn’t have much to do with them.

These days he basically goes around teaching half-truths and being shady on social media to stay just relevant enough for pop culture nerds to be obsessed with him.

I actually have an explanation for that! In January of 1977, Mark Hamill got into a pretty bad car accident. It wasn’t widely publicized because it was after they filmed A New Hope but before it came out, so no one knew who he was. He messed up his nose and cheek pretty badly, to the point where he had to have cartilage taken from his ear to reconstruct parts of his nose and cheek. It’s also rumored to be why Lucas wrote in Luke getting mauled by a wampa in the beginning of Empire Strikes Back, to make an excuse as to why he looked different.
