The Flint tornado was particularly devastating because it wasn't just one tornado, it was two, one picking up the exact same path a few minutes right after the other one was gone. This was the only tornado to kill over 100 people until the Joplin Missouri tornado in 2011 (An EF5, and still the tornado to date that has caused the most finical damage)

Having multiple tornados at once isn't that uncommon, having one "pick up" a trail after one disappears is a bit more uncommon, especially outside of tornado alley.
