Additionally, norethindrone is not a combination pill (meaning it doesn’t contain estrogen) which means that it uses a different mechanism to prevent pregnancy. Norethindrone does NOT have placebo/iron pills and you do have to take the whole pack, unlike ones with placebo pills. It prevents pregnancy primarily by thickening cervical mucus so much that it won’t be penetrated by sperm, so it doesn’t stop ovulation. However, cessation of ovulation is a common side effect (just not the primary method of protection) which means you might have irregular or no periods at all. This is normal. It’s more important to take norethindrone every 24 hours than other birth control, but, if you miss a pill you only have to worry about pregnancy for two days, where if you miss a combination pill you have to wait two weeks to be back to normal.
