So on my side of town where I live crime at all is pretty rare, 5-10 murders a year maybe. And last christmas a guy that was sort of adjacent to my group of friends, about my age, got killed and cannibalized by some older dude (save your Hannibal jokes I swear to fucking god) and he’s only just now on trial after being declared competent and it’s like, the trial of the year around here. And this guys big fucking argument is that the victim wanted to be killed and eaten and he was doing him a favor

Compared to the city I live next to with one of the highest crime rates in the country? Yeah
It’s really weird but kinda heartwarming that in Japan it’s tradition to have KFC for Christmas dinner? Like Christmas isn’t a big holiday in Japan to begin with but in the 1970s KFC launched this ad campaign about having KFC for Christmas and it just took off and now KFC has Christmas wine and everything and you have to reserve KFC Christmas dinners in advance and it’s so weird but kinda cute?
Christmas cake is also a thing in Japan because it’s thought to be something Americans do and it got started because of American soldiers after WWII and Christian missionaries (at least that’s what I’ve read) but it’s just usually a vanilla and cream cake with strawberries and it always looks so cute and tasty
At least that’s better than fruit cake which I’m convinced has never been edible and if anything it’s a weapon.

Jewish people don’t celebrate Christmas, to them it’s just another day. So they often would want to go out to eat, but a lot of restaurants here in the US close on Christmas. Chinese restaurants are usually open on Christmas though and they usually have a lot of kosher options, making them one of the prime eating out options. So we started going to Chinese restaurants on Christmas out of convenience and it evolved into a tradition :)
On this day, 25 December 1914, 100,000 troops on the Western Front during World War I held an unofficial truce where they refused to fight one another. German troops began singing “Silent Night” in German, French and English, along with other Christmas carols. They decorated the trenches with Christmas trees, lit candles and hung multilingual banners wishing opposing armies “Merry Christmas”. Across much of the front artillery fell silent, British troops joined in the carol singing and both sides began to shout Christmas greetings at one another.
On Christmas Day, soldiers began to climb out of the trenches to fraternise with the other side, bring back bodies from no man’s land and exchange gifts like tobacco, chocolate and alcohol. In several areas there are first-hand accounts of often-improvised football matches being played.
The truce covered about 100,000 men, almost entirely on the Western front however there was also a small truce along part of the Eastern front between Austrian and Russian troops. Fighting continued in some areas.
Henry Williamson, a British private, wrote to his mother on December 26: “In [my] pipe is tobacco. Of course, you say. But wait. In the pipe is German tobacco. Haha, you say, from a prisoner or found in a captured trench. Oh dear, no! From a German soldier. Yes a live German soldier from his own trench. Yesterday the British & Germans met & shook hands in the Ground between the trenches, & exchanged souvenirs, & shook hands. Yes, all day Xmas day, & as I write. Marvellous, isn’t it?”
British authorities were extremely angered by the mutiny, and ordered that soldiers engaged in informal truces be court-martialed.
