Mom is getting her knee replaced today and I ran into the anesthesiologist in the hallway and we started talking and I was like “yeah moms nervous, she’s never had surgery like this before” and he asked if I was her bio kid which was weird but I was “uh. Yeah.” And he was like “oh so she has the redhead gene” (I’m ginger, mom has dark hair and eyes and olive skin) and I was like “…. Yeah” and he was like “well redheads and pale eyed folks usually need more anesthesia because they’re more resistant to it” and I was like “oh like how redheads supposedly have a higher pain tolerance” and he said “yeah that’s true. We have to increase the dosage sometimes for redheads.” And that’s so fascinating to me???? And satisfying too considering being a redhead, but our pain doesn’t manifest in the same way?? that’s so interesting to me. Subtle differences in different races of human are so fascinating

I think, now that I consider it, this is possibly related to how poc are treated by the medical field. Their pain is often downplayed, especially when it comes to women. I wonder if we all just need extra pain killers but we’re systematically denying them to poc and then blaming them for “complaining too much” or w/e. I’m high so ignore me if I’m completely off base
