Fun fact: There are a lot of rivers in the UK named “avon” because the Romans arrived and asked the Celts what the rivers were called. The Celts answered “avon.”
“Avon” is just the Celtic word for river.
Fan Fact #2: When Spanish conquistadors landed in the Yucatán peninsula, they asked the natives what their land was called and they responded “Yucatán”. In 2015, it was discovered that in those mesoamerican languages, “Yucatán” meant “I don’t understand what you are saying”

Byrne’s Euclid—Oliver Byrne, a 19th century engineer, designed this version of Euclid’s Elements, replacing symbols and letters with colored shapes and lines. Most modern “technological” words are just shoddy translations when they get translated into foreign languages. A personal favorite is the German translation for “screenshotted” because in German you just use the present tense verb, add a “ge” on the front, and if it ends with a “t” you slap a “et” on the end

I don’t even know. It’s from a book about languages my friend’s been reading. (it’s creepy that I can understand it …)
It was actually invented with that purpose: anyone who spoke any European language should be able to understand esperanto. It was meant to be a lingua franca.

Between German, English, Latin, a bit of French, Dutch, Spanish and Italian that was actually pretty readable to me.
I speak English and a very little spanish, and I can read it.
Super legible and I love it.
There are a few movies done partly or entirely in Esperanto, the most famous probably being Leslie Stevens’ Incubus (1966), a horror film starring William Shatner!
