I CANT BELIEVE IM LOOKING AT A COSPLAY OF THAT ONE BIRD GIF
IT’S NOT JUST A BIRD GIF IT’S A VERY IMPORTANT BIRD OF PARADISE CALLED THE SUPERB BIRD OF PARADISE, IT IS FAMOUS BECAUSE OF BBC’S PLANET EARTH HOSTED BY DAVID ATTENBOROUGH OKAY
JESUS
IT STARTS THE DANCE AT 2:05
THE COSPLAYER DOES A SPLENDID JOB OF PERFORMING THE MATING DANCE AS SCRIPTED AND I THINK THAT’S VERY IMPORTANT
HERE IS WIKIPEDIA’S FRANKLY SPECTACULAR JUSTIFICATION FOR THE DANCE
The species has an unusually low population of females, and competition amongst males for mates is intensely fierce. This has led the species to have one of the most bizarre and elaborate courtship displays in the avian world. After carefully and meticulously preparing a “dance floor” (even scrubbing the dirt or branch smooth with leaves), the male first attracts a female with a loud call. After the curious female approaches, his folded black feather cape and blue-green breast shield springs upward and spreads widely and symmetrically around its head, instantly transforming the frontal view of the bird into a spectacular ellipse-shaped creature that rhythmically snaps its tail feathers against each other, similar to how snapping fingers work, whilst hopping in frantic circles around the female. The average female rejects 15-20 potential suitors before consenting to mate.
THIS COSPLAYER HAS TRULY CAPTURED THE SPIRIT OF THE BIRD AND ITS DANCE AT EVERY LEVEL
Mythbusters Physics: Relative Velocity
The Mythbusters tested what would happen if a ball was shot at 60 mph off the back of a truck travelling at 60 mph to see what would happen.
It became a perfect example of the relative nature of physics - showing that velocity can vectorially add together. 60 mph in one direction cancels the 60 mph in the other, meaning a net velocity of zero.
thanks, you discovered vectors. Fuck me sideways this is dumb
Yup, everyone has the same level of knowledge as you. There’s no one to learn anything from this.
Just to add, before the Mythbusters did this it was purely a thought experiment and had never been empirically tested at that point. So you are seeing in those two gifs the first actually test of that hypothesis since it had been proposed back in Newtons time.
As an astrophysicist I’d like to apologize for @surrenderless rude ass comment. We’re not all pretentious and like they said above, this was the first time this was ever tested. Imagine being so pretentious to something more profound like the double slit experiment.
Season is a beautiful bicycling adventure where you explore & document a doomed world.
Here’s the orbital period of our solar system’s 8 major planets (how long it takes each to travel around the sun). Their size is to scale and their speed is accurate relative to Earth’s. The repetition of each GIF is proportional to their orbital period. Mercury takes less than 3 months to zoom around Sol, Neptune takes nearly 165 years.
fuck this gifset do you know how long i sat here waiting for fucking neptune to drag its lazy ass into the frame
Geometric GIFs by Florian de Looij
Designer Florian de Looij’s playful GIFs’ geometrical nature lends itself to designing an interesting GIF. By transforming, regenerating, slicing and altering the shape of each figure into smaller singular representations of the whole, the artist creates a fun setting. Deviating from a cold standard design, where mainly the colors black, white and silver are used Florian de Looij implements a vibrant scheme to rejuvenate the typical geometric GIF.

I just wanna talk about No Man’s Sky for a second because the map for that game is absolutely massive? There are 18 quintillion planets to explore in No Man’s Sky. It’s an online multiplayer, but the odds of running into someone are so slim it might as well be impossible. Like, there are 18 quintillion planets, across multiple galaxies, to explore. And that’s what you do! You explore and chart star systems! Boldly Going where no man has gone before! And I think that’s why I like it so much, tbh. I’m not gonna live long enough to like, actually explore the galaxies in real life! I’m not gonna live long enough to see people explore other planetary systems in real life! But you can get a taste of it with this game, a taste of what could be in the very distant future and fuck dude it’s just really cool
Found a Penguin Classics cover generator
Okay, but can we talk about how the Paradise Lost one is meme text attached to one of Gustave Dore’s woodcuts for Paradise Lost
She has a point
There are two situations in which I make extremely sure I’m going precisely at or below the speed limit:
- I see a cop
- Some asshole is tailgating me
This is both spiteful AND practical, because you can’t control whether or not they give you a safe following distance for the speed you’re travelling, but you CAN reduce the speed you both have to travel, having the triple benefit of
A) increasing the likelihood that they’ll have enough time to stop without rear-ending you.
B) lowering the speed of any possible collision and thus the severity and
C) Pissing the fucker the fuck off.
I feel so valid now
