For my one year anniversary/farewell for my research job my team all chipped in an bought me a pendant bottle with moon dust in it I’m gonna cry

kaijuno

here’s a picture because some people were asking. the moon dust isn’t from an Apollo mission or anything, but rather a lunar meteorite that struck the earth (Lunaite). My pendant in particular is about about a 10mg sample of the meteorite NWA 4881 (Standing for Northwest Africa). It was found in 2005 and weighs 606g. It was purchased privately by Stefan Ralew in 2007.

Some new information I found: NWA 4881 is thought to be about 4 billion years old, which is about 500 million years after a massive object struck the earth, creating the moon. At this time, the earth had only just cooled enough for a crust to form. Some think, that due to geological markers, that the meteorite arrived on earth around 1.34 billion years ago.
