so artisans today are still utilizing the striking properties of uranium glass (which do not, of course, include radiation)–I think a lot of people think of uranium glass as something vintage or antique only
Oh it’s definitely radioactive. Just not dangerously so.

uranium is actually super common (just not the isotope bombs use) and it wasnt expensive at the time but they mainly stopped because around ww2 the military was like “hey we can make bombs out of this” so they confiscated it all and put so many regulations on it it wasn’t worth using anymore
Autunite is a secondary uranium mineral, named for its type locality near Autun, France, with a chemical formula of Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2·10-12H2O. Autunite ranges in colour from pale yellow and yellow-green to greenish black. It dehydrates to meta-autunite on extended exposure to air, becoming yellower and less greenish.
Autunite fluoresces green-yellow under UV light, and due to its uranium content is radioactive. It may also be used as an ore. It generally occurs in the oxidation zone of uranium-bearing rocks, and is associated with other uranium minerals, such as torbernite and uranophane. Crystals may be tabular or micaceous.

Can confirm chemists are the best mad scientists. My year 10 chemistry teacher had a glass eye bc he lost one in an experiment, used to take kids out of school during the day to set off fireworks, multiple times walked up to a random desk poured an undisclosed liquid all over it and then handed the student sitting there a box a matches and told them to light one and drop it in, once broke a ceiling light with a diy rocket and later accidentally fixed it by lighting a hydrogen balloon beneath it
Follow up on the chemistry teacher ask - a couple years earlier I had another chemistry teacher who made fireworks in her garden shed and maybe sometimes stole school supplies to do it. She was one of two science teacher at my school to have a phd.
