I’m so glad that my dad took me hunting. He showed me how guns work. How guns kill by the time I was 5. I helped him gut deer. I helped him put them down if they were injured. It’s very important, I think, to be exposed to death at that age. Because I got it. I knew we were killing for food, for resources, it’s not like the deer would go to waste. But I understand we were taking a life to prolong ours, and there’s this primal almost… sense of duty we would have towards the deer. That they were to be treated well until killing time. That they were to be cared for otherwise. We are a species that kills. We always have been. It’s in our nature. But that doesn’t mean we have to be monsters.
