[ID a tweet by Ethan Dowden aka theejdude that reads: you may think playing Dungeons and Dragons is about going into dungeons and fighting dragons, but it’s actually me and my friend rolling dice to find out which of us a make-believe horse likes more. END ID]
For my 21st birthday we were joking about going bar hopping but playing dungeons and dragons irl So we’d fuckin have like random number generators on our phones and then if we roll a one we have to punch them but if we roll a 20 we have to try to bang them

so wild hearing about sps outside of my school and conferences. like it makes sense but still. but another astrophysicist here!
running into other sps chapters at like conferences and stuff makes ppl go feral
I got elected as the first ever SPS social media chairperson and the first woman to ever be on the SPS e-board!!

What is SPS, and what position did you hold? I was thinking about being on board for one of the clubs I'm in, but idk if its gonna be too much work
Society of Physics Students
There were about 12 of us and I ran the social media pages, answered emails, did outreach to local schools. I wrote the monthly dept calendar. Nothing too taxing tbh
You can really tell what kind of people physicists are by looking at the cork board in our department office. We have 3 Chinese takeout menus, pictures of dogs that represent the undergrads and professors (I’m a corgi loaf aw) a one dollar bill that was once SPS’s entire yearly budget, and pictures of famous physicists with their names horribly misspelled and wildly incorrect quotes from them

I had 2 girls in my department including myself so.. no lol
What we did was infiltrate the SPS chapter and take over their board. I was the PR and social media manager and the other girl was the president. Most of the outreach stuff I did was aimed at getting children involved with physics

I have an associates in astronomy and will be getting my bachelors in astrophysics in December because the uni wouldn’t take some of my gen ed classes so I have to take them again.
I am published, I am in SPS, I have worked in both lab and observatory settings. I have already started my masters classes in physics because I have already completed the undergraduate classes I need to take before them. I used to grade half of the departments astronomy classes, I have presented research at multiple conferences.
A lack of a piece of paper does not strip me of all of my accomplishments and hard work.
